Suicide is a major public health problem and a leading cause of

death in the United States. The effects of suicide go beyond the person who acts to take

his or her life: it can have a lasting effect on family, friends, and communities. 

  • Waning Signs Verbal suicide threats such as, “You’d be better off without me.” or “Maybe I won’t be around”

  • Expressions of hopelessness and helplessness

  • Previous suicide attempts

  • Daring or risk-taking behavior

  • Personality changes

  • Depression

  • Giving away prized possessions

  • Lack of interest in future plans

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Veterans can access the

Veteran Crisis Line by calling the national line and pressing 1. Anyone can also text the crisis line by

sending TALK to 741741, or chat online at www.chat.suicidepreventionlifeline.org.
